NSFW AI chat and companions
See the eight comparedThe largest slice of demand in this cluster and the one with the widest gap between what is advertised and what is delivered. Two different products share the label: a disposable session and a character that persists.
Two products, one label
| Session chat | Persistent companion | |
|---|---|---|
| Kept after closing | Nothing | Character and history |
| Priced by | Messages or free with ads | Monthly subscription |
| Fails when | Context window fills | Summarisation drifts |
| Worth testing | Tone and refusal behaviour | Recall after a week away |
Memory is a summary, not a recording
No product in this category stores a conversation and re-reads it. What they store is a compressed description that gets re-injected at the start of each session: a few hundred words standing in for weeks of history. Every characteristic people complain about follows from that. Details are kept selectively. Contradictions accumulate. A character can be confidently wrong about something you told it twice.
The useful test is not the first hour, it is the second week. Return after several days and check whether the character recalls specifics or only a register. Free tiers are long enough to run that test, and it separates products more reliably than any feature list.
What filters actually do
Uncensored, in this category, describes willingness to produce explicit text. It does not describe an absence of rules: the prohibited list is effectively identical across every operator that can take card payments, and the real differences are in behaviour at the edges. A model that deflects in character is a usable product. A model that breaks character to deliver a policy statement is not, whatever its marketing says.
Privacy is the specification that matters
A chat log in this category is the most sensitive artefact a consumer product can hold, and the policy around it is the least likely thing to appear on a pricing page. Three questions settle it: how long are conversations kept, is deletion real or a flag, and are logs used for training. A vendor answering all three in writing is rare enough that it should weigh heavily.

What happens to prompts and uploads
Prompts in this category are sensitive by definition, and a vendor that keeps them indefinitely turns a breach into a personal disaster.
Walk away if: No retention period anywhere, no deletion route, support answers by asking for a screenshot of your billing page.
-
Billing and cancellation
Adult platforms are the single largest source of subscription complaints, mostly over renewals and descriptor names on the statement.
Walk away if: Cancellation requires email, the trial auto-upgrades to annual, or the statement descriptor is undisclosed.
-
Age assurance on the platform
Platforms without an age check lose payment processors first and hosting second, which takes your purchased credits with them.
Walk away if: Entry is a single yes/no click and the terms do not mention verification at all.
-
What the content filter actually blocks
An 'uncensored' tool still has a prohibited list, and knowing it beforehand saves paying for a plan that refuses your use case.
Walk away if: No published content policy, or a policy that permits categories no payment processor will touch.
